International Day for Biological Diversity 2025
The Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB), under the Government of Kerala, is organizing a series of programs at the state, district, and local levels to observe the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 2025. These programs will span all 14 districts of the state targeting a wide range of stakeholders including students, teachers, citizen scientists, farmers, Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs), and policymakers.
- Consultation on the Red Data Book of Kerala
KSBB will convene a one-day consultation on the State Red Data Book of Kerala, a critical initiative in light of the growing threats to Kerala’s rich ecological heritage. The consultation aims to facilitate dialogue among policymakers, scientists, community representatives, and conservation practitioners. It will focus on identifying priority species and ecosystems, addressing key conservation challenges, and laying the groundwork for a comprehensive, state-specific biodiversity policy. This initiative seeks to ensure an integrated and legally supported framework for the conservation of Kerala’s threatened biodiversity.
- 17th State level Student’s Biodiversity Congress and Prize Distribution
As part of the IDB 2025 celebrations, Kerala State Biodiversity Board is organizing the 17th State level Student’s Biodiversity Congress and Prize Distribution Ceremony on May 22, 2025, in Thiruvananthapuram. This flagship event aims to raise awareness about biodiversity among school and college students, promote youth engagement in conservation, and celebrate innovation and creativity in biodiversity advocacy. Sri A.K. Saseendran, Hon’ble Minister for Forests and Wildlife, Government of Kerala, will inaugurate the event and present awards to the winners.
- District-Level Programmes
With the active participation of 1200 BMCs, District Biodiversity Co-ordination Committee (DBCC’s), 2100 Biodiversity Clubs, 140 Technical Support Groups (TSGs), educational institutions, R&D centers, and NGOs, a wide range of district-level activities will be organized. These events aim to engage diverse sections of society and translate the campaign’s goals into impactful grassroots action.
- Statewide BMC Workshops
On May 22, 2025, all 1200 BMCs across Kerala will conduct one-day workshops to review and evaluate their ongoing biodiversity activities. These workshops will align with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (K-M GBF) targets, fostering greater coherence and accountability in local biodiversity governance.
