The Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB) organized, a significant brainstorming event on November 15, 2024, at the KSCSTE conference hall in Thiruvananthapuram. This gathering aimed to explore the enhancement and future opportunities of the proposed Kerala Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL). It brought together scientists, digital documentation experts, policymakers, and legal professionals from across the state to discuss traditional knowledge (TK) systems that can foster modern innovation while protecting intellectual property (IP) rights. The focus of the event was on creating a unique database for Kerala similar to the TKDL that would document Kerala’s ancient medical, agricultural, ecological, and cultural knowledge in a digitized and scientifically validated manner. The TKDL initiative at the national level has been instrumental in preventing the misappropriation of traditional knowledge through patents filed in foreign countries. However, the state initiative places a greater emphasis on documentation of both primary and secondary data on the TK, digitization of TK, its scientific validation, the development of Access and Benefit Sharing models, and the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) as envisaged under the provisions of Biological Diversity Act 2002. Dr. N. Anil Kumar, Chairman, KSBB, chaired the session the audience was welcomed by Dr. V. Balakrishnan, Member Secretary of KSBB. The session was inaugurated by Prof. K.P. Sudheer, the Executive Vice President of KSCSTE and Prof. A. Sabu, Member Secretary of KSCSTE, delivered a special address. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. C.S. Vimal Kumar, Principal Scientific Officer.
