‘Jaivajalakam’: A Monthly Online Talk Series to Strengthen Biodiversity Clubs

The Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB) has inaugurated ‘Jaivajalakam’, a significant monthly online talk series designed to invigorate and support the activities of Biodiversity Clubs across the State. This initiative provides a dedicated platform for both Teacher Coordinators and Student Members of Biodiversity clubs to engage with experts and deepen their understanding of critical environmental issues.

The series further explored “Agrobiodiversity Conservation” in a session led by Dr. C. George Thomas, former Chairman of KSBB. Dr. Thomas emphasized the role of agricultural biodiversity in alleviating poverty and enhancing climate resilience through locally adapted species and varieties. He elaborated on conservation strategies operating at local, national, and international levels. Significantly, he discussed the importance of the FAO’s designation of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) and noted Kerala’s strong potential for securing such prestigious status for several of its unique agro-ecosystems.

Focusing on aquatic ecosystems, Dr. A. Biju Kumar, Professor and Head of the Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala, presented a session on “Marine Biodiversity”. His talk illuminated the immense importance of ocean ecosystems, the astonishing abundance of life they harbour, the multifaceted threats they face, and the essential conservation measures required. Dr. Kumar also highlighted practical opportunities for Biodiversity Clubs to participate in marine biodiversity surveys.

Dr. T.S. Swapna, Professor from the Department of Botany, University of Kerala, then addressed the vital “Role of Youth in Biodiversity Conservation”. Dr. Swapna meticulously detailed how young individuals can actively contribute by engaging with biodiversity-focused programs and projects initiated by governmental and non-governmental organizations. She underscored the significant impact of individual conservation actions, especially during youth, and passionately reminded the young participants that they embody the nation’s hope, urging them to rise to the challenge of ensuring the sustained health of our biodiversity and environment.

The momentum continued with a captivating session on “Wildlife Photography and Biodiversity Conservation” led by Mr. Anand Kumar S. Mr. Kumar shared his profound field experiences, demonstrating how compelling wildlife imagery can serve as a potent voice for species conservation. His presentation, richly illustrated with striking photographs captured in diverse wild locations both within India and internationally, particularly energized the student attendees. Their keen interest was evident through numerous pertinent questions raised during the interactive segment.

The series commenced effectively with an inaugural presentation titled “Earth is Weeping”, delivered by Dr. N. Anil Kumar, Chairman of KSBB. The presenter compellingly outlined the severe threats confronting our planet’s biodiversity, emphasized the crucial role humans must play in conservation efforts, and offered insightful perspectives on the future of biodiversity preservation. This foundational session successfully drew an audience exceeding 200 participants, setting a strong precedent for the series.
